Luis Diaz finds himself at a bit of a crossroads in his career this summer, with his contract at Liverpool expiring in 2027.
The 28-year-old has enjoyed a productive 2024/25 campaign, scoring 13 goals and providing 5 assists in 35 Premier League appearances.
Díaz’s current deal, signed in January 2022, runs through 2027 with an annual salary of £2.86 million – making him among the lower earners at the club.
The club values Díaz at €85 million (£72 million), a figure reflecting the inflationary Saudi market.
With two years remaining on his contract, the Reds face a familiar dilemma: secure long-term commitment or capitalize on peak value.
Fans were worried after the Colombian’s partner appeared to post what resembled a goodbye message on social media this week.
Interest from Saudi Arabia is real.
Al-Hilal, Asia’s most decorated club with 70 trophies5, views Diaz as a marquee signing to bolster their Club World Cup ambitions.
Al-Nassr’s interest, meanwhile, appears linked to Cristiano Ronaldo’s potential departure, though club executive Fernando Hierro insists the Portuguese star remains central to their plans,
Furthermore, claims emerged from Spain’s Mundo Deportivo last week that sporting director Deco has earmarked Diaz as the club’s primary summer target.
They claimed the Colombian has “no intention” of renewing at Anfield while the Spanish giants remain interested.
It has been a polarizing story to say the least.
Now reliable Colombian journalist Pipe Sierra has come out with an emphatic report on the situation.
Taking to X, Sierra stated that reports of Diaz wanting to leave Anfield are “completely false”:
“It is completely false that Luis Díaz (28) has decided to leave Liverpool.”
“In fact, talks for his contract renewal have already begun, and they are working on a longer contract with a salary increase.”
“If he doesn’t sign, the Reds will be open to selling him for more than €80m [£67.6m], as reported by Fabrizio Romano, with Barcelona and Al Nassr being the most interested at this point,” he added.
The club will no doubt be keen to resolve the situation quickly, with sporting director Richard Hughes on the case.
The Colombian has publicly stated his happiness at Liverpool and his openness to staying long-term, but the opportunity to join Barcelona – a club that has tracked him since his Porto days – surely remains tempting.
