Luis Diaz and Colombia battled out a 1-1 draw with Argentina at the Buenos Aires’ Estadio Monumental, with the Tricolor showcasing a resilient performance.
The result leaves Colombia in sixth place with 22 points, maintaining their position in the direct qualification zone for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, though their path remains precarious with two matches remaining.
And it was the Luis Diaz show in Argentina.
Receiving a long ball from Castaño, the Liverpool man embarked on a 40-meter solo run, weaving past Enzo Fernández, Cristian Romero, and Nicolás Otamendi before slotting a clinical finish past Emiliano Martínez.
The goal, Diaz’s seventh in the qualifiers, tied him with Radamel Falcao’s 2014 campaign as Colombia’s most prolific in a single cycle.
Despite heroics from Liverpool’s No.7, Colombia struggled to capitalize on Argentina’s vulnerability after Fernández’s 70th-minute red card for a reckless challenge on Castaño.
Instead of pressing their numerical advantage, the Tricolor retreated defensively, inviting pressure that ultimately led to Argentina’s equalizer.
Nevertheless, the chance to miss the win did not impact Colombian media affection for Diaz.
El Heraldo gave the Liverpool winger a 7.5/10 and showered him with praise:
“Luis Díaz (7.5).
The best of all, as almost always.
Not only because of the great goal he scored, but because he always generated danger, risk and his rivals could not stop him.”
ESPN Colombia also labelled the 28-year-old as the best Colombian player on the pitch, writing:
“Colombia’s best player, he started the match with a shot inside the box that went to the corner kick, he did a lot of damage when he threw himself to the side, dragging the mark of his rivals and causing individual actions that ended up near Dibu Martínez’s area.”
“He scored a great goal after a counterattack, leaving several players in the way and defining inside the area with a right-footed shot.”
Finally, Win Sports labelled Diaz as the “great figure” of the team:
“Luis Díaz (8.5): the great figure of the ‘tricolor’?
He scored the goal and generated constant danger on the Argentine goal.”
