'Conversations': Eddie Howe speaks out on Alexander Isak and admits there's 'things going on behind the scenes'

Liverpool supporters are desperately waiting for news on whether their club is going to smash the British transfer record once again this summer.

The Reds have been on a mad spending spree since the window opened, plunging more than £100m into the capture of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen.

But the fee for Wirtz could yet be dwarfed, as Liverpool ready a mammoth move for Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak.

Isak has asked to leave Newcastle after an excellent season in which he scored 27 goals.

And with the Reds seemingly still on the lookout for another new striker following Hugo Ekitike’s arrival, it appears to be Anfield or nowhere for Isak.

Now, with Newcastle out in Singapore and his star striker back home on Tyneside, Toon boss Eddie Howe has spoken out to deliver an update on the situation.

Although Isak appears ready to push hard to get his move to Liverpool, there has been no official movement from the Reds just yet.

Nevertheless, reports on Friday suggested that Isak is likely to join Liverpool instead of stay at Newcastle this summer.

And when Howe sat for a press conference early on Saturday morning, the topic of the big Swede was of course the most pressing.

“Of course there are things going on behind the scenes,” the manager said via journalist James Olley.

“Conversations that happen between Alex and myself & Alex and the club will stay private.

We’d love him to continue his journey at Newcastle.”

While Howe clearly did not want to give anything away while speaking to the media, this does not bode like an especially positive update from the Newcastle manager.

As well as admitting to things taking place behind the scenes, Howe did also go on to confirm that by this he did not mean contract extension talks with Isak.

“There are no contract talks taking place.

That will be for a later date potentially,” he said via journalist Craig Hope.

While Howe does not shut the door on Isak staying and even signing a new deal, this does not sound particularly promising from a Newcastle point of view.

For Liverpool, they must now sit a little tight, wait for Newcastle to accept they are not going to persuade Isak to stay, and then come in with a bid which they simply cannot say no to.
