Crystal Palace and Everton receive transfer response on Conor Gallagher

Wed 27 August 2025 10:52, UK

Crystal Palace and Everton have each been given a response over whether Conor Gallagher would like to join their respective clubs from Atletico Madrid this summer.

England midfielder Gallagher now plies his trade with Atletico Madrid, but once emerged through Chelsea’s academy to make 95 appearances for their first team between 2022 and 2024.

Atletico signed Gallagher from the Blues for £34million [The Guardian] last summer after he was told he was not in Enzo Maresca’s plans, and the England international enjoyed a decent first season in Spain with 50 appearances made in all competitions.

He did only make 19 league starts though, and Football Insider revealed in July that Everton are interested in Gallagher amid uncertainty over whether he wants to stay in La Liga and battle for a spot in the starting eleven.

Football Insider also revealed on Monday (25 August) that Crystal Palace want to re-sign Gallagher on an initial loan deal, after his impressive loan Eagles loan spell in 2021/22, but now a move to either side has been made to look unlikely.

According to a report from the Daily Mail (26 August), Crystal Palace and Everton have each received a blow in their pursuit of Gallagher after being informed that he is happy at Atletico and on a good financial package.

They also state that, should the La Liga giants need to sell him for PSR reasons, it is anticipated they would want around £40m for the former Eagles loanee.

Football Insider verdict

He remains an Atleti player for now, but Gallagher has also been linked with a move to Newcastle this summer, so Everton and Palace are not the only Premier League clubs that could make a move for him in the final week of the window.

The 25-year-old seems like the perfect signing for any of those clubs, as he is homegrown, has a wealth of experience at club and international level, and has previously shown his quality in the Premier League and La Liga.

He was handed a start by Diego Simeone in Atletico’s first league game of the season against Espanyol on 17 August, but was taken off at half-time for tactical reasons, then only came on for 20 minutes in last weekend’s clash against Elche.

It is clear that he has not been able to completely convince his boss that he should be his go-to man in the middle of the park, and so a move back to England should really appeal to him going forward.

If financial reasons are why he does not want to return to the Premier League, then he needs to take a step back and properly assess which club is going to give him the best chance of starting, and then move there, especially with the World Cup on the horizon next summer.
