Crystal Palace could submit a compensation claim after an update has emerged in their appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

The Premier League side qualified for the Europa League after beating Manchester City in the FA Cup final in May to get their hands on their first-ever major trophy.

Uefa removed Palace from the second-tier European competition after ruling former co-owner John Textor had breached its multi-club ownership rules.

The American billionaire owns a stake in Lyon, who also qualified for the Europa League, with Uefa’s rules prohibiting clubs controlled by the same owners or directors from competing in the same European competition.

Oliver Glasner’s side are currently set to play in the Conference League, while Nottingham Forest have been promoted into the Europa League.

Palace are confident of overturning the verdict after their key arguments have been revealed.

However, their legal battle might not end on Monday if the decision goes against them.

The Times reported on Thursday the Eagles could submit a compensation claim in the European courts if they fail to win their appeal.

It comes after the European Court of Justice ruled last week CAS should provide more avenues of appeal.

Finance expert Stefan Borson told Football Insider Palace or Forest could earn up to £20million more from the Europa League than the Conference League due to the significant difference in prize money on offer between the two competitions.

Palace will also have to play either Norwegian side Fredrikstad or Danish club Midtjylland in a Conference League play-off round later this month if their demotion stands, with the winner progressing through to the league phase of the competition.

Glasner is continuing to prepare his side for the new season despite the uncertainty surrounding which European competition they will be playing in.
