Crystal Palace drop subtle hint over Marc Guehi transfer saga as Liverpool line up alternatives

Liverpool are in the market for a new centre-back and have plenty of options to choose from.

The Reds have not exactly been very secretive this summer regarding their transfer plans and the majority of teams, and fans, know what type of players they want to bring in.

As well as a winger and a striker, a new centre-half is towards the top of Arne Slot’s wishlist, and perhaps now even top after selling Jarell Quansah and with Ibrahima Konate’s future up in the air.

Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi is one name they have been linked with and seems the most plausible given that he has just one year left on his contract.

Palace now have a decision to make as to whether to cash in on him this summer at a cut price or let him go for free next year, but either way Liverpool will be there waiting.

However, the Reds may have had their most telling sign yet from the south London club regarding their captain’s future, and it looks like they will have to play the waiting game.

As well as transfer announcements, fans of all clubs eagerly await the unveiling of their new shirt every season, hoping that they can buy one with their favourite players’ names on the back.

Liverpool have to wait to reveal their new kit, but Palace have already done theirs, with captain Guehi front and centre in their announcement photos.

The 24-year-old is pictured alongside teammates Jean-Philippe Mateta, Adam Wharton, Maxence Lacroix and Justin Devenny, suggesting that the plan is to continue with all of these players next season.

Interestingly, star player Eberechi Eze is not included in any of the photos amid rumours that he is joining Arsenal, another subtle hint that could suggest who stays and who goes.

Guehi is reportedly happy to run his contract down at Selhurst Park to be able to move on a free next summer, and this now suggests just that.

Modelling the new kit, however, still does not mean he is guaranteed to stay but it would just be an awkward situation for all involved, just like Liverpool endured in 2014 when Luis Suarez posed in the new shirt to then be sold to Barcelona soon after.

Guehi has also already featured for Palace in their first pre-season match, another suggestion that he is fully part of Oliver Glasner’s plans.

There is no denying the quality that Guehi possesses, but he does go against the Reds’ typical centre-back target profile, indicating that he must have really made an impression on those higher up at Anfield.

If they fail in their pursuit, however, they will revert back to their original plan and sign a younger alternative between the ages of 18 and 22.

They have wanted a player who is ready to learn under Virgil van Dijk to eventually take over from the Dutchman when necessary, with replacements already being lined up.

Parma’s Giovanni Leoni and Wolfsburg’s Konstantinos Koulierakis are two names on the radar and fit the profile they are looking for, and they would not come at too high a cost either.

Both would certainly be a gamble given they have no prior Premier League experience, suggesting that forking out a little more for Guehi might be the route to go down, that is if they do not get him for free next summer of course.
