The Crystal Palace captain is out of contract next summer, and Liverpool have been exploring the possibility of bringing the extremely talented centre-back to Anfiedl on a cheaper deal than otherwise expected.
Marc Guehi has been quiet throughout the saga, despite reports linking him with the move to the Premier League champions for some time now, and has started Crystal Palace’s two Premier League games of the new season, as well as the Community Shield against Liverpool.
Crystal Palace have been unwilling to let Guehi go so far, as they look for replacements and negotiate a fee that they are happy with, and Sami Mokbel of the BBC has now revealed another detail of the negotiations.
The Eagles have explored the prospect of bringing in Joe Gomez on loan to soften the blow of Marc Guehi’s departure to Liverpool.
However, it is believed that Liverpool have no intention of letting Gomez leave for Selhurst Park on a temporary basis and will reject any formal offer from Crystal Palace to take the defender on loan.
The denial of a Joe Gomez exit is understandable, as the departure of three defenders this summer from Liverpool has left the depth of the back-line weaker than the previous season.
Arne Slot will be wise to keep Joe Gomez, as he is a player who is versatile and can be deployed anywhere across the back-line if needed.
Crystal Palace are frantically trying to sign two centr-backs before the transfer window shuts, and if that happens, Marc Guehi is free to depart to Liverpool as the Eagles are keen to get a fee for him.
They won’t get a fee if they do not sell him within this transfer window or in January, as his contract is up next summer and he has made it clear that he does not wish to sign a new contract.
The Eagles currently have a number of names they are keeping an eye on, and despite not being able to secure Joe Gomez this summer, they will continue to pursue the possibility of other players including Jaydee Canvot, Manuel Akanji, Ousmane Diomande and Evan Ndicka.
