Marc Guehi’s failed move to Liverpool has unsettled some members of the Crystal Palace squad as the club tries to deal with the fallout of a shocking deadline day saga.

Crystal Palace had been wary of Marc Guehi potentially leaving the club for pastures new all summer, yet a move away never truly seemed likely until the final stages of the window.

Former scout Mick Brown told Football Insider in July that Guehi had his heart set on a move to Liverpool, despite interest from Tottenham, but the Anfield outfit seemed to focus on other incomings before making a concrete approach for his services.

Guehi’s move to Liverpool was expected to happen as deadline day arrived on Monday (1 September), with a medical completed and only the finishing touches needing to be applied before the transfer was finalised.

Guehi’s Liverpool switch then collapsed at the last-minute after the Eagles failed to bring in a centre-back replacement in time for everything to be completed, and now a number of Palace players are reportedly joining the England centre-back in his anger at the failed move.

Former scout Brown told Football Insider on Tuesday (2 September) that Guehi is “angry and disappointed” after his Liverpool move was called off in the final moments of the summer window.

The Guardian (2 September) have now also revealed that the 25-year-old is not the only one reeling, with other members of Oliver Glasner‘s senior squad also believed to be “upset” that Guehi was denied his move to Anfield.

According to the same report, there have been no suggestions that he will revolt and not play for the Eagles again, yet one source close to the player has said that he is considering whether he should continue as Glasner’s captain.

Football Insider verdict

Guehi’s impressive exploits at Palace in recent years have made him one of the most in-demand centre-backs in the Premier League, and a move to Liverpool will have undoubtedly appealed as they look set to continue challenging for titles in the years to come.

With that said, the 24-year-old needed to be given assurances of ample playing time at Anfield if he was to make the move, especially with the likelihood of being a starter for England next summer at the World Cup in the USA.

Arne Slot’s centre-back options were looking relatively light before Liverpool snapped up Giovanni Leoni from Parma, and with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate likely to start every game in which they are fit, it arguably made little sense for Guehi to join the Reds if he was to be resigned to the bench.

Staying at Selhurst Park and potentially helping them to a Conference League triumph and another strong Premier League showing would definitely benefit him in the long-term, and he will now be able to assess all of his options next summer and have a better chance of being first-choice at a top club, as well as demanding higher wages.
