Liverpool must decide whether to pursue a deal for Marc Guehi in January or wait until next summer when the defender is a free agent.

That is according to finance expert Dan Plumley, who told Football Insider exclusively that the Reds may “look to play real hardball” when it comes to signing the England international.

Guehi agreed on a move to Liverpool on deadline day, only for Crystal Palace to pull the plug on the deal with just hours to go.

The former Chelsea man has no intention of accepting a new contract offer from his current club, according to The Times, and is set to become a free agent next summer.

Mick Brown also told Football Insider that Guehi is angry at Crystal Palace’s decision to cancel the deal, after Oliver Glasner’s side failed to sign a replacement for the defender.

And with the Reds still needing defensive cover as Ibrahima Konate’s contract situation with Liverpool is still unresolved, Arne Slot‘s side must decide on whether to make a move for the Eagles’ captain in January, or wait for him to be available for free in the summer of 2026.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Plumley outlined Liverpool‘s options should they want to add Guehi to their squad in the future.

He said: “Do Liverpool come back in January and say we really want him still, we’re prepared to pay a bit of a fee for him in January?

“Or do they look to play real hardball and look to secure a cut-price deal in the summer?

And if Palace can secure a fee in January, they might be tempted to sell at that point.

“But there is a scenario where he could leave in the summer for free and then I think they’ll probably feel like they lost out on a little bit of revenue there.

“It’ll be an interesting one to keep an eye on as we tick on to January.”

Whilst their move for Guehi may have fallen through, the Reds did manage to offload one of their fringe players on deadline day.

Harvey Elliott joined Aston Villa from Liverpool on loan with a £35million obligation to buy [BBC Sport], but that figure was £15m less than their initial asking price of £50m, Mick Brown told Football Insider.

The Premier League champions decided to sell the 22-year-old at a reduced rate to avoid having a discontent player in their squad.

However, Liverpool do have a buy-back clause and a sell-on clause in the deal.
