Tyrique George has gone from being a potential new shining light at Stamford Bridge to being almost completely shut out from the Chelsea first-team.
The day is the 20th of April 2025 and the Blues are 1-0 down to a dogged Fulham side away at Craven Cottage.
After a fast start to the season, Enzo Maresca’s side fell away, struggling to find consistent form through the middle of the campaign, risking their chance to compete in the Champions League.
On comes the young marvel George for the wasteful Nicolas Jackson as the young Englishman equalised within five minutes of coming onto the field.
This inspired a miraculous comeback for the Blues, as Pedro Neto snatched a late stoppage time winner, which would then see Chelsea march on to win four of their next five Premier League games and secure Champions League football for the 2025-26 season.
Yet, after being the beacon of hope for a superb run-in for the west London outfit, flash forward four months later and the 19-year-old is no longer needed, how is this so?
On top of Maresca’s squad marching to the top five in the league, George’s heroics also ignited a flawless tournament victory in the Conference League, playing every game bar one in the competition.

Moreover, the young Englishman netted in Chelsea’s FIFA Club World Cup-winning campaign as the team went on to beat European champions PSG comfortably in the final.
In classic Todd Boehly style, the club went large bringing in Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund and the previously-agreed Estevao from Palmeiras to play on the wings.
But, with no guarantees over game time, the number 32 is now “prepared to leave” to find better prospects of minutes, even on a permanent basis (Fabrizio Romano), while The Guardian now report that the young forward is “expected” to leave alongside the likes of the unwanted Ben Chilwell and Axel Disasi.

The Chelsea academy graduate is a symptom of a larger problem occurring at Stamford Bridge where heavy spending is limiting opportunities for youth players to push through the ranks.
Similarly, Alfie Gilchrist is another player also in the attacker’s position who has become surplus to requirements in west London.
An ideal balance for any team is having a constant conveyor belt in a La Masia style to encourage organic growth whilst recruiting experienced performers to strengthen the side.

However, Boehly’s approach is essentially rendering the academy useless, as PSR rules mean the American favours selling homegrown talent to balance the books to reinvest in his “London Galacticos”.
George will now have to leave the Bridge to embark on a new journey in his footballing path and secure improved minutes to further his development.
Once the catalyst for getting Chelsea’s season back on track, the future England star will now have to part ways with his boyhood club to reach the top, likely making the Blues regret the corner they pushed him into.
