Dan Burn has seemingly suggested that Newcastle fan support outshined Liverpool’s support at Wembley during the Carabao Cup final in February.
Liverpool approached the Carabao Cup final on the back of a bruising Champions League exit to Paris Saint-Germain.
In the second leg at Anfield on March 11, they fell to a 1–0 defeat to Ousmane Dembélé’s early strike and were knocked out 4–1 on penalties despite an improved second-half showing.
That setback compounded an already relentless fixture list prior to the Wembley showpiece.
Fatigue had been brewing for weeks.
Arne Slot admitted after a February win at Wolves that he “saw for the first time this season that players were more tired than they have been”.
Andy Robertson echoed those concerns post-PSG, lamenting “a lot of tired legs” in his post-match interview.
At Wembley, the accumulated exhaustion was glaring?
Defensive lapses allowed Dan Burn and Alexander Isak to strike early, and Liverpool’s high-octane pressing game never ignited.
Federico Chiesa’s late consolation merely underlined a flat, lifeless display that fell well short of Wembley standards,
But it seems that Newcastle Dan Burn feels like another factor was also at play
Speaking on the High Performance podcast, the England international feels that the Newcastle fan support was much stronger on the day than Liverpool – but understands that Reds fans are far more used to seeing their team in a final compared to their Magpies counterparts:
“When you looked and saw the Newcastle fans compared to the Liverpool fans and, don’t get me wrong, Liverpool are an unbelievable team that are used to playing in finals and winning things – we’re not,” Burn explained.
“I’m not speaking for them but that might not have meant as much for them as it did to us.”
“The League Cup final was the be-all and end-all for us whereas, for them, it was like just another trophy.”
It’s likely a fair assessment by the towering defender, as the moment in February was 70 years in the making for the Geordies.
