Newcastle defender Dan Burn says he understands supporters' frustration over the nature of Alexander Isak's transfer to Liverpool but says he does not hold his now former team-mate's action against him.

Isak completed a drawn-out move to Merseyside on transfer deadline day when he became the most expensive player in British football history at £125m but it was a controversial exit from St James' Park.

Having initially been left out of the 4-0 defeat to Celtic on July 19, Isak then refused to travel on the club's tour of the Far East, citing a minor injury issue, before returning to training at the facilities of former club Real Sociedad, without the knowledge of those at Newcastle.

An explosive statement that spoke of broken promises and lost trust on August 19 was publicly disputed that same night by the Magpies' hierarchy and Isak finally got his move on deadline day after the two clubs reached an agreement on Sunday evening.

Lifelong Newcastle fan Burn says he can see why fans are unhappy with the behaviour of Isak across the summer, but speaking on England duty to preview tomorrow's visit from Andorra, the Magpies' defender holds no ill will towards his now former colleague.

"I am glad it is done," Burn admitted.

I have been in football long enough to understand that for a player, the careers are short and they have got things they want to achieve.

"Alex is a mate and it is a tough situation because you want him to be around and helping the team, but also understand for him what he needs to do personally.

I have nothing but good wishes for Alex.

"No animosity.

As a Newcastle fan, we are very protective of our club and city and we want players to be there who want to play for Newcastle and you don't want them to naively think that there is anyone else to go apart from Newcastle.

"So I understand why our fans are frustrated.

I wish Alex all the best apart from when we play Liverpool, obviously."

Isak's British-record arrival means the Reds ended the summer window having spent £444m with around half of that recouped on player sales.
