Liverpool have had some brilliant attacking partnerships over the years, with iconic duos and trios littered throughout their history.

As a new dawn breaks on the Reds’ forward line ahead of 2025/26, supporters will be hoping the likes of Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike can carry on those traditions.

Whatever Wirtz and Ekitike can manage, though, they will do well to hit the heights of Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez at Anfield.

Sturridge and Suarez formed one of the Premier League‘s most electric partnerships of all-time during the 2013/14 season, scoring 21 and 31 goals respectively.

Although it was not quite enough to drag Liverpool to an unlikely Premier League title, ‘SAS’ as they became known, are remembered with huge affection.

As he looked back on what it was like to play alongside Suarez in 2023, Sturridge revealed what the pair used to speak about before matches which may have helped them be so effective.

There were other good players in the Liverpool squad as they ran Manchester City close for the title in 2014, but these two were the key to it all.

And according to Sturridge, something just clicked between the two players as soon as he arrived in January 2013.

“We hit it off instantly.

[Same] wavelength,” Sturridge told Sky Sports via Liverpoolfc.com in November 2023.

“We just had that thing where we knew where each other would be.

It was a joy to play with him, I wish I could have played with him longer, to be honest, because it was only a season-and-a-half.”

“Our partnership was almost like two players who had individual technical abilities to score goals on their own,” added the striker.

“But could also create for each other, and I think that’s what probably made us a good partnership.

“When we played a split diamond [midfield] I’d be all the way over on the right, he’d be all the way over on the left but we’d still look for each other or we’d cause the opposition more problems by doing that.

“We did [speak about it].

I’d have conversations like, ‘If I see you I’m going to play you [in], if you see me you play me in, round the box we make combinations, we’ve got to make things happen.’ That was our mentality.”

Sturridge is absolutely right to say the only regret of his and Suarez’s partnership together is that it simply did not last long enough.

In the one full season they played together, they hit 55 goals in all competitions.

Suarez was the key man, but the big ‘what if’ for Liverpool in 2013/24 remains surrounding Sturridge.

Had he played more than the 29 matches he managed, the Reds would likely have won the Premier League.

In terms of all-time goals, Suarez managed 82 for Liverpool in total, with Sturridge bagging 67.
