Daniel Sturridge has advised Liverpool to prioritize offering vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold a new contract before considering any new signings this summer.
The 25-year-old played a crucial role in Liverpool’s recent victory over Tottenham at Anfield in the Premier League on Sunday.
Despite facing disruptions due to injuries this season, Alexander-Arnold has continued to excel.
With only two years remaining on his current contract, several rival teams are showing interest in acquiring his services.
Real Madrid have reportedly shown interest in Alexander-Arnold, with reports indicating that the Spanish giants are closely monitoring the right-back’s situation.
Despite no indication from the England international that he wants to leave Liverpool, Real Madrid’s interest in Alexander-Arnold is well-documented.
The La Liga champions are observing the defender’s circumstances closely and are prepared to make a move if they perceive an opportunity to sign him, particularly on a free transfer next year.
He was appointed as the vice-captain to Virgil van Dijk last July and has thrived in his new role with added responsibilities.
Former Liverpool striker Sturridge suggests that it’s opportune to secure Alexander-Arnold’s future with a long-term deal.
“That’s a tough one, because I think all the top clubs around Europe are going to be sniffing,” said Sturridge.
“Then you’ve got Liverpool, who, I think they’ve got to do everything in their power to get him [Alexander-Arnold] to sign on a dotted line.
“You can’t lose a man of Trent, you know, he’s from the city.
“You’re talking guys like Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher, who have represented one club and and I think that’s what you kind of want for Trent.
“Of course, Mo [Salah] and Virg [Van Dijk], they’re guys that, you know, they’ve brought in.
“They’ve been absolutely world class for the football club?
“But the local lad in Trent who’s become a superstar at the football club, he’s the one that you want to make sure.”
Alexander-Arnold has featured in 35 games and made 12 goal contributions for Liverpool across all competitions this campaign.
