Al-Hilal chief executive Esteve Calzada has hinted that the Saudi Pro League club are going to make a move for Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez this summer.

Simone Inzaghi's side failed in a £63million move for Napoli's Victor Osimhen before the Club World Cup but are still determined to strengthen their front line and sign a No.9.

Nunez, 25, has emerged as a potential target for Al-Hilal with his Liverpool future uncertain.

The Uruguayan, who joined the Reds in a £85m deal from Benfica in June 2022, started just NINE Premier League matches last season and dropped down the pecking order following Arne Slot's appointment.

It's reported that the Reds want to fetch at least £50m for Nunez, with Napoli, AC Milan and Atletico Madrid among the others interested in securing his services.

But Al-Hilal could reignite their interest in Nunez, having tried to sign him in January, and the club's CEO has said in an interview with the BBC that they are "targeting the biggest players".

While refusing to comment on Nunez - and Osimhen - specifically, Calzada said: "We are targeting the biggest players.

We are very ambitious, but we need to see hunger from the player himself and the transaction needs to work out both ways.

"The only thing we've been trying to remind players and agents is that yes, we are from Saudi, but we don't print notes here!

My role as CEO is to make sure we run the club efficiently, so that we can have the biggest budget possible to have big players, but not at any cost.

"That's why sometimes we basically walk away from negotiations, because we still want players extremely keen on coming, and not only looking for the money."

It was claimed towards the end of last season in the Portuguese media that Liverpool were limiting the striker's appearances to avoid paying an add-on to Benfica.

But Slot hit back at those claims by stating that he’s never been told not to play someone at Liverpool down to financial reasons.

He said: "Do you always believe what journalists say?

"Sometimes you should, but sometimes it’s better not to believe everything that is written about players.

"This is completely new to me and I’ve said many times that I’m working at a club here where it’s really nice to work.

"So mainly sporting directors are judged by the players they bring in, for me it’s very important to have a great working environment and I have that with Richard [Hughes].

"The last, last, last, last, last thing he would do, as I expect working with him for 10 months, is tell me: 'If you play him, it would cost us this much'.
