Some big claims have emerged from Spain regarding Darwin Nunez and his future.

The No.9’s turbulent three-year spell at Liverpool is nearing its conclusion, with multiple reports confirming the Uruguayan striker is almost certain to depart Anfield this summer.

The 25-year-old has struggled to justify his price tag under Arne Slot.

Despite making 46 appearances across all competitions, he has managed only seven goals and seven assists – a return deemed insufficient for line-leading striker of Liverpool’s ambitions.

His limited impact saw him start just one Premier League match in 2025, a damning indictment of his standing in Slot’s plans.

Nunez’s potential availability has sparked a scramble not just among European clubs but also the Saudi Pro League.

Al-Hilal emerged as frontrunners for Nunez’s signature after a £558,000-a-week offer in January 2025, which the player was eager to accept.

However, the Anfield club did not want to risk disturbing a squad that was competing for the Premier League and Champions League at the time.

It is believed that all four of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) clubs, Al-Hilal, Al-Nasr, Al-Ittihad and Al-Ahli, want Nunez.

But now a new frontrunner has seemingly emerged.

Spanish outlet Cadena SER have brought forth quotes from journalist Miguel Martín Talavera, who spoke on ‘El Larguero’ – a podcast offshoot from Cadena SER.

It is claimed that Atletico Madrid are prioritizing the signing of a new striker for next season, especially with Angel Correa likely to leave and Antoine Griezmann expected to take on a different role.

Their main target is Darwin Nunez, and it is suggested that he has already given his blessing to make the switch to the La Liga club.

The Spanish newspaper outlines:

“With the Uruguayan striker ‘they have already spoken’, and Miguel Martín Talavera reports ‘ that within the club’ they are clear that the footballer would be delighted to arrive at Atlético de Madrid’, as well as the Colchoneros who are looking to strengthen with Darwin Núñez.”

“After the conversations they have had with the Uruguayan striker, he can confirm that ‘everything is already discussed with the player’, and also ‘the player’s OK to arrive at Atletico Madrid is also on the table”, the only problem that exists is the negotiations with Liverpool.”

While a loss on Nunez’s initial fee is inevitable, his age and residual marketability could still command £40–60 million, funds vital for revamping Slot’s attack.

For the 26-year-old, the summer represents a chance to reboot a career stagnating under Anfield’s scrutiny.

His blend of physicality and raw pace remains enticing, yet suitors will no doubt demand greater composure in the final third.
