When Liverpool confirmed Hugo Ekitike’s £79 million arrival from Eintracht Frankfurt and began their relentless pursuit of Alexander Isak, few supporters were surprised by the writing on the wall for Darwin Nunez.

The Uruguayan striker’s days at Anfield appeared numbered long before this historic summer window.

For most Liverpool fans, Nunez’s likely departure represents not just an expected outcome, but perhaps a necessary one.

After three seasons of promise unfulfilled and chances squandered, the club’s summer transfer activity has made clear that Arne Slot’s vision for Liverpool’s attacking future does not prominently feature the £85 million striker who once arrived with such fanfare from Benfica.

The numbers tell a damning story that Liverpool supporters have witnessed with increasing frustration.

Nunez has scored just 39 goals in 131 appearances for Liverpool, averaging a goal every 182 minute.

In his most recent campaign, the Uruguayan managed just seven goals in 47 appearances across all competitions, a return that fell far short of expectations for a player of his price tag.

It is surprising that Nunez is still at the club after Napoli showed serious interest but were not willing to meet Liverpool’s €70m valuation.

But it seems a new Serie A side is keen on taking the striker off the Reds’ hands.

Il Bianconero report that Juventus have pinpointed Nunez as their preferred backup option should their pursuit of PSG striker Randal Kolo Muani not come to fruition.

According to the report, the Bianconeri have initiated contact with both Liverpool and Nunez’s representatives to explore the possibility of a move.

Journalist Andrea Ajello claims:

“Nunez does not represent Juventus’ priority nor the player on whom the club is making the greatest efforts in terms of work?

In fact, the number one target for the attack remains Randal Kolo Muani.”

“However, if the negotiations with PSG were not to be successful, the Juventus club cannot be found unprepared and for this reason it is also moving for other players.”

“Nunez at the moment seems to be the one on which Juve is most active after Kolo Muani.”

While Nunez will likely retain some supporters who remember his crucial goals against Newcastle United in 2023/24 or his late heroics at Brentford this past season, the broader fanbase appears ready to move on.
