Darwin Nunez and Virgil van Dijk fume as Liverpool supporters respond to Everton taunt

Liverpool saw their Premier League title challenge all but extinguished with a dreadful defeat at Everton on Wednesday.

A hugely underwhelming performance saw the Reds slump to a dismal 2-0 reverse.

The result means Jurgen Klopp’s men now need both Arsenal and Manchester City to drop an unlikely amount of points to have any hope of winning the championship.

But there was plenty that went unnoticed or under the radar during the 90 minutes at Goodison.

IAN DOYLE: Dominik Szoboszlai becomes a major concern as Darwin Nunez question needs answering

Nunez not happy

Liverpool were pretty terrible for key parts of the derby, but that doesn't mean they didn't have justification for some grumbles during a dreary evening.

Indeed, Virgil van Dijk, Alexis Mac Allister and Luis Diaz all went into the book for dissent as referee Andy Madley awarded Everton a succession of occasionally soft free-kicks.

And at the full-time whistle both Van Dijk and Darwin Nunez could be spotted directing what appeared sarcastic applause in the direction of the official before Klopp spotted a growing issue and told the latter to shush.

Trent annoys trio

The visitors misfired horribly in attack for much of the game, and even when they did find a way through then either Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford or the post got in the way.

And the frustration during the first half became evident when Trent Alexander-Arnold, in attempting to initiate an attack, succeeded only in belting the ball straight downfield to Pickford.

Nunez, Dominik Szoboszlai and Mohamed Salah all turned to the Reds vice-captain with their arms outstretched in frustration.

Mind you, given how that trio underperformed, they should have been among the last berating a misplaced pass.

Back on the boos

Everton fans were understandably rather pleased with how matters were going at Goodison, and they didn't miss a trick in reminding the away end of the fact.

The Liverpool followers were pretty quiet during the second half, prompting some in the home section to chant forcibly that their level of support was, to put it kindly, somewhat sub-standard.

That, though, merely led to the travelling Kop breaking out into a chorus of boos, which many of them regard to be a regular feature among Everton fans at Goodison in recent years.

Not on Wednesday, however.

Bad maths

There was a funny moment in the press box after the game as the members of the media rattled out their prose as their respective deadlines approached.

"Keep on writing, guys, keep on writing, we win one of these every year!" exclaimed one delighted departing Everton fan, who then pondered for a second and corrected himself by declaring: "Well, one every 25 years."

Liverpool's ability to avoid defeat at Goodison hasn't been quite that extensive.
