Darwin Nunez has been a polarizing figure virtually ever since he moved to Liverpool in 2022, and his Anfield adventure is widely expected to end this summer.

The Uruguayan was signed for a colossal fee but has not delivered on the promise he showed at former club Benfica.

He managed respectable 15 and 18-goal seasons during his two years under Jurgen Klopp, but his game time and goals have both reduced under Arne Slot.

He has netted just seven times this season, and he has only started once in the Premier League since Boxing Day: March's 3-1 win over Southampton, in which Nunez scored and assisted.

A post appeared on Nunez's X account on the eve of Liverpool's potentially title-clinching game against Tottenham, which said: "No wonder I didn't play more, because the last game I started in the Premier League went well and suddenly..." The post was quickly deleted, but not before it was picked up on by plenty of Reds supporters.

A short while later, Nunez posted again, but this time there were no inflammatory words, rather just the words 'Good morning!' alongside a picture of him with Alexis Mac Allister, as well as a mug of maté.

Some fans weren't willing to let the original post slide though.

Rumors swirled this week that Slot has not been selecting Nunez of late because just one more start for the Uruguayan would trigger an additional transfer payment to Benfica.

Slot shut that suggestion down in a press conference on Friday, saying: "Do you always believe what journalists say.

Sometimes you should, but sometimes it’s better not to believe everything that is written about players.

"This is completely new to me and I’ve said many times that I’m working at a club here where it’s really nice to work.

Sporting directors are judged by the players they bring in, for me it’s very important to have a great working environment and I have that with Richard (Hughes).

"The last, last, last, last, last thing he would do, as I expect working with him for 10 months, is tell me: 'If you play him it would cost us this much.'
