Darwin Nunez could see his time in the Saudi Pro League come under threat soon, despite getting off to a strong start with Al-Hilal.

The ex-Liverpool striker, who left the club last month in a transfer worth just over £46million, scored in three consecutive pre-season outings for Simone Inzaghi's side.

While he did find the net in Al-Hilal's 2-0 win over Al-Ryadh, it was ruled out by VAR – but the Uruguayan seems to be settling in well so far.

However, this could reportedly all come crumbling down for the 26-year-old, thanks to a new plan put in place by the Saudi government.

Officials are planning to reduce spending on football and put the country's four most important clubs up for sale: Al-Nassr, Al Hilal, Al Ittihad and Al Ahli.

As reported by Brazilian news outlet O Globo, the government is aiming to reduce football clubs' dependence on public funds and attract other investors to run these teams instead.

At present, 75% of the capital belongs to the Public Investment Fund (PIF), with the remainder controlled by the Ministry of Sport.

This decision made by the hierarchy could complicate Nunez's contract in Saudi Arabia, just weeks after he penned a deal with his new club until 2028.

Big-time Saudi clubs, such as Al-Hilal, may plan to reduce their spending in preparation for this government decision to come into effect, in order to keep their side afloat for the longer term.

With this comes a side of jeopardy for new signings, such as Nunez, given that they don't have the same amount of authority within the team as other stars who have been there for longer.

Nunez departed the Reds this summer, bringing the curtain down on what many would argue was an underwhelming career at Anfield – given his transfer fee.

He managed just 20 Premier League goals across his first two seasons before being phased out of the side by current manager Arne Slot.

Nunez did help secure the Premier League title, Carabao Cup and Community Shield before his Saudi departure, and said how he will hold the club close to his heart for the rest of his career.
