Darwin Nunez’s three-year tenure at Liverpool is drawing to a close, as widespread reports indicate the Uruguayan forward is highly likely to leave the club this summer.
The 25-year-old forward, who arrived as Liverpool’s record signing for £85 million in 2022, has endured a disappointing 2024-25 campaign that has seen him relegated to the fringes of the first team and sparked intense speculation about his future.
Across 46 matches in all competitions, he has contributed just seven goals and seven assists—a tally widely considered inadequate for a striker expected to spearhead Liverpool’s attack.
His diminishing influence was underlined by starting only a single Premier League fixture in 2025, marking a clear signal of his reduced role in Slot’s squad.
Plenty has been said on where the Uruguayan could end up in the summer.
Atletico Madrid has been touted as a credible option, although the La Liga side may not be willing to offer what Liverpool are looking for.
The Saudi Pro League will always be there after they already made efforts to sign the Uruguayan in January.
But Liverpool were unwilling to consider selling Nunez mid-season while they were still competing on four fronts, prompting Al-Nassr to shift their focus to Colombian forward Jhon Duran instead.
Now that the season has ended, that stance has shifted.
Journalist Santi Aouna has reported that Al-Hilal and Darwin Nunez’s camp are currently engaged in talks over a transfer.
Al-Hilal has reignited their pursuit following the collapse of a €70 million (£59 million) bid for Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, viewing Nunez as a viable alternative to bolster their attack.
The Saudi club, which offered Nunez £558,000 weekly wages during January negotiations, will be able to offer what the Anfield club is looking for.
Although Liverpool are set to take a loss on the original fee paid for Nunez, his age and remaining market appeal could still see the club recoup between £40–60 million.
At 25, the striker now has the opportunity to reignite a career that has stalled amid the pressures of playing at Anfield.
