Darwin Nunez will soon leave Liverpool, and regardless of popular opinion, he will depart Anfield a cult hero among supporters.

Although his big-money arrival on Merseyside from Benfica in 2022 has massively underwhelmed, no one can doubt that Nunez left everything on the pitch for the Reds.

It simply did not click for the Uruguayan in the Premier League, with a return of only 25 goals in 95 outings throughout a three-year spell.



The Reds now want Alexander Isak to bear the goalscoring burden.

Indeed, he has a big-miss catalogue larger than any other forward in recent years, but once Nunez leaves Liverpool for Al-Hilal, he will remain etched in a top-ten Premier League list for a positive reason.

According to Opta Joe, Nunez has scored the seventh most goals in Premier League history in the 90th minute and beyond.

Furthermore, since his league debut in 2022, no player has scored more than Nunez’s three goals – all of which secured the Reds the three points on the day.

One factor that supporters across football often fail to consider is the weight of a goal scored.

Players are more likely to score goals in big wins, but it shows real grit and determination to step up when it matters most.

Yes, Nunez’s mentality throughout his Liverpool career can be questioned, from deleting club-related content from his social media to missing big opportunities that have decided games.

However, the 26-year-old delivered on the big occasion several times for the Reds, and while the majority of the fan base is pleased that his tenure has come to an end, Nunez has shown impeccable professionalism during the Al-Hilal negotiations and should be remembered for what he contributed at Anfield.

The Reds may have failed to deliver the Premier League title in Jurgen Klopp’s final campaign at the club, but it wasn’t for the lack of trying on Nunez’s part.

All Liverpool supporters will remember when Nunez was introduced off the bench at St James’ Park with the Reds a goal, a man down due to Virgil van Dijk’s dismissal, and almost certainly heading for defeat.

Nunez would equalise in the last 10 minutes before latching onto a through ball from Mohamed Salah in the 93rd minute to score his second of the game and secure the three points in the North East.

While many thought that would be the start for Nunez, his form continued as expected until he replicated the feat with a sensational 99th-minute goal away to Nottingham Forest – the moment many believed would see Liverpool go on to win the title.

He would, however, deliver a title-winning moment for the Reds.

Last term, he would come off the bench to score in the 91st and 93rd minute at the Gtech Community Stadium to secure a 2-0 win against Brentford, and the rest was history.

Nunez may cut a controversial figure on Merseyside, but he delivered some truly sensational moments for the Reds and should be wished the best of luck as he continues his journey in Saudi Arabia.
