Darwin Nunez and his admittedly turbulent three-year spell at Liverpool is nearing its conclusion, with multiple reports confirming the Uruguayan striker’s anticipated summer departure.
Despite arriving in 2022 as a club-record £85 million signing from Benfica, Nunez has failed to cement himself as a consistent starter under manager Arne Slot, prompting Liverpool to cut their losses.
The 25-year-old striker has experienced a significant reduction in playing time during the current campaign.
Darwin Nunez has only started one Premier League match since the beginning of January, with his last start in any competition coming in March against Southampton.
This striking decline in appearances has corresponded with persistent rumours linking the Uruguayan with a summer exit.
Nunez has struggled for form this season, scoring just seven goals across all competitions.
It’s been another disappointing campaign for the 26-year-old, with Fabrizio Romano confirming in April that his exit is all but guaranteed:
“I can confirm once again, guys, this is the clear direction of the story.”
“Darwin Nunez is expected to go.
Darwin Nunez is ready for a new chapter,”
The likes of Al-Nassr have been linked to Liverpool’s No.9, having already made an approach in the January window, while Atletico Madrid are also believed to hold some form of an interest in the player.
Nevertheless, a big claim has emerged from South America this week.
Argentina outlet DR Sports has claimed that Darwin Nunez has been offered to giants River Plate ahead of the Club World Cup starting on 15 June.
The Argentine powerhouses will be playing at the summer tournament in the USA.
It is reported that the player’s salary would not be an issue, surprising as the 26-year-old is believed to net £140,000 per week.
The report does not mention any terms of the transfer in terms of whether it would be a loan or permanent exit.
It certainly would be a surprising transfer to make, as European football would be a higher quality for a player who still has plenty to prove – while the tax-free riches of the Saudi Pro League would be a better option financially.
