Darwin Nunez and his future at Liverpool has become slightly cloudy after the events that transpired at the weekend – with Barcelona now entering the picture.
Despite the energy the Uruguayan striker brings to the field, he struggles to convert that vigor into consistent goal-scoring.
Remarkably, since November, Nunez has netted just 7 league goals, a concerning figure for a player who could cost up to £85 million with add-ons.
Throughout this Premier League season, he has scored only 11 goals, a tally that falls short for a lead striker on a title-contending team.
Nunez has squandered 26 significant opportunities this season, managing to score only 11 times, according to the BBC.
While he trails Erling Haaland, who missed 30 big chances, Haaland has still managed to score 20 goals.
Consequently, Darwin Nunez holds the lowest big chance conversion rate in the league at a mere 20%.
Against Tottenham Hotspur, the 24-year-old was afforded a cameo off the bench with Cody Gakpo having started down the middle.
The Uruguayan was once again guilty of missing a big chance in the dying embers of Liverpool’s 4-2.
After the game, Nunez seemed to remove most of his Liverpool-related Instagram posts, sparking concern and confusion around the fanbase.
Of course, with Nunez still struggling nearing the end of his second full season at Anfield, it has sparked transfer rumours – most notably with Barcelona.
Darwin Nunez’ agent angling for Barcelona switch
Spanish outlet Sport has come out with report today detailing that Darwin Nunez is once again a topic of conversation in the Camp Nou.
The Uruguayan forward has become a viable option to strengthen the attack should Robert Lewandowski depart the club at season’s end.
The Polish striker is now 36 and has not had the best season in 2023/24 by his standards.
Nunez had reportedly previously agreed to join Barcelona in the summer of 2020.
The 24-year-old spent a season at UD Almeria before signing for Benfica, meaning that he has experience in La Liga.
The recent Instagram story posted by Barcelona man Ronald Araujo has done little to snuff the flames.
Benfica intervened securing his transfer for 24 million euros plus a future percentage fee before Barcelona could act, but it is said that Nunez himself verbally agreed to join Barcelona.
In fact, the report goes as far as to say that the Catalan club have been following Nunez ‘for years’ and reached an agreement in principle with Almeria in 2020 for eight million euros.
Nunez was bought for a potential fee of £85 million with add-ons in the summer of 2022.
Of course, he is not worth that now so a transfer could be difficult to sanction on Liverpool’s side.
However, a big claim is added to the report:
“Darwin is now represented by Jorge Mendes, who has offered the player to the Blaugrana in the event of Lewandowski’s departure.”
If true, then it can’t a good sign that Nunez is changing agents, as players normally do this when they are preparing for a transfer.
Nevertheless, nothing is decided or confirmed, and the best thing we can do is continue giving Nunez the support he needs at Liverpool.
