The global football community is in mourning today after Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota lost his life in a devastating road accident in northwestern Spain.

The 28-year-old and his younger brother, André Silva, were killed instantly when the Lamborghini Aventador they were travelling in veered off the A-52 motorway near Cernadilla, ignited upon impact and burst into flames.

Liverpool FC confirmed the “unimaginable loss” in a brief statement, urging respect for the privacy of Jota’s wife, Rute Cardoso, and their three young children.

Two weeks after celebrating his marriage in Porto, Jota had been returning from holiday when a suspected tyre blowout during an overtaking manoeuvre caused the fatal crash according to early examination by Spanish authorities.

Tributes poured in from every corner of football.

Former teammates and rivals alike shared their grief.

Jamie Carragher posted, “Absolutely devastated by the sad news about Diogo Jota?

Thoughts are with his wife Rute and their three kids”; Cristiano Ronaldo lamented, “It doesn’t make sense… Rest in peace, Diogo and André”.

The Portuguese Football Federation described the brothers’ deaths as “irreparable losses for Portuguese football” and requested a minute’s silence ahead of the Women’s European Championship fixture against Spain.

Now Darwin Nunez is the latest individual to pay his respects to Diogo Jota and his brother, taking to Instagram to write:

“There are no words of comfort for so much pain.”

“I will always remember you with your smile, as a good companion on and off the field.”

“I send all my strength to his family, from where he is I’m sure he will always be with you, especially his wife and three children.”

“Q.E.P.D [Que En Paz Descanse, which translates to “Rest In Peace” in English] Diogo and Andre.”
