Darwin Nunez has been a prominent name in the media recently, albeit for the wrong reasons.
The Uruguayan came off the bench against during Liverpool’s 4-2 over Tottenham Hotspur last weekend and went on to miss a guilt-edged chance in the dying moments of the game.
He looked frustrated with himself and was seen heading straight down the tunnel after at full-time, not showing the best body language.
As a result, plenty of speculation has emerged in the aftermath, with many questioning his long-term future at Anfield.
Reports from Spain has linked him to Barcelona, while it has also emerged that the 24-year-old has changed representatives to super-agent Jorge Mendes.
Despite the vigor and unpredictability Darwin Nunez adds to the game, he has found it challenging to convert this into regular goal scoring.
Since November, Nunez has managed to score only 7 league goals, a troubling statistic given that his transfer fee could rise to £85 million with additional clauses.
Throughout the Premier League season, he has scored a total of 11 goals, a tally that is below what is expected from the main striker of a team challenging for the title.
Nevertheless, Jurgen Klopp dismissed any notion that Nunez could be leaving anytime soon, saying in his pre-Aston Villa press conference:
“There’s no speculation….
Really tough for a young man.”
“He has big expectations on himself, that’s tough and you just have to go through this – there’s no alternative.”
In a more light-hearted note, Nunez was the topic of an interview from ESPN Uruguay.
What did Darwin Nunez say about his Liverpool teammates?
Speaking to ESPN Uruguay, Liverpool’s No.10 spoke about how he and Alexis Mac Allister spoke before Uruguay’s 2-0 win over Argentina in World Cup qualifiers in November last year:
“We didn’t talk much about the game before going to the National Team,” explained Nunez.
“However, I did tell him that if they changed the court they [Argentina] were going to lose because there (at the Monumental de Núñez, where in November there were several Taylor Swift concerts) is where they were winning all the games and it was not the time to change, and even more so against us who are doing well.”
Then we talked about the game, he congratulated me, he told me that Uruguay had good players and that we played a good game against them.”
The 24-year-old also revealed the reason behind his celebration with Alexis Mac Allister, with their mate (South American green tea beverage) themed celebration becoming popular:
“It all started when he criticized my mate; One day we were sitting at the table, he criticized me again for the mate and it occurred to us that whoever scored a goal the other would bait a mate and give it to him, everything came from there,” he said.
Finally, Nunez referred to the South American pair of Luis Diaz and Alexis MacAllister as ‘two excellent people’:
“They are two excellent people, two friends that I have in the dressing room every day”.
“We try to share every moment at the club from the moment we arrive until we leave,” he said.
“Luchito is a very happy person, he is very funny?
Maca too, but it’s quieter.”
“We’re always together talking about the games, a little bit of everything and also about how close the Copa America is, time flies and we can’t wait to be there.”
