Darwin Nunez’s time as a Liverpool player is coming to an end, and much like he has throughout his three years at Anfield, he will leave fans with mixed feelings.

A move to Saudi Arabia has been agreed, with the Uruguayan set to join Al Hilal in a $61.5 million move, with more money available to Liverpool through add-ons.

It should be just a matter of time before the deal is completed, with Nunez expected to join the Pro League club at their training camp in Germany for his medical.

Indeed, the striker was a notable absentee from Liverpool’s latest training session on Thursday, having seemingly said his goodbyes to his teammates before heading for his next venture.

His exit comes as no surprise, although it will always be tinged with regret for a lot of supporters, and no doubt some at Anfield too given the financial hit taken after his big-money move from Benfica in 2022.

There were some flashes of the player many had expected after he caught the eye playing against the Reds in the Champions League, and there are plenty of memories that can be cherished, not least his heroics at Brentford last season.

Those moments proved too few and far between though, with Nunez often proving to be a frustrating figure as his efforts in front of goal showed little sign of improvement.

It’s no surprise then that a move away from Anfield has been on the cards for some time, and Nunez has seemingly been aware of that.

In fact, a move to Saudi Arabia could have come back in January after Al Nassr reportedly had two offers turned down by Liverpool, with the Reds not wanting to offload Nunez at the time due to not having a replacement lined up.

Not long after those offers came to light, Nunez actually made a direct reference to the interest coming from the Middle East

Appearing in a Pro:Direct Soccer video, Nunez and Luis Diaz discussed which Liverpool player had the best car, with the latter teasing his former teammate about owning five of them

Of course, it was an offhand comment made in jest by the striker, although there was certainly a feeling that there might be a little more to it.

Indeed, Nunez is understood to have told Liverpool he wanted to leave back in January, and just a few months after calling out Saudi Arabia, a move to the Middle East beckons.

There will be plenty left wondering whether he still could have kicked on at Anfield, especially after impressing during pre-season, but in truth, Nunez’s exit is the best outcome for both parties, with the Reds potentially able to use the funds from his move to launch a bid for his replacement - which fans will hope is Alexander Isak.
