Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez has opted for a daring new look, as he sports a shaved head.

The Uruguay regular celebrated his 26th birthday on Tuesday and in celebratory pictures on social media, it showed Nunez ditching his trademark ponytail for a buzz cut.

The forward arrived on Merseyside in 2022 after a blockbuster move from Portuguese side Benfica, and he quickly became instantly recognisable due to his long hair.

After the Reds cruised towards the Premier League title, he made a subtle change and sported cornrows for their crowning moment against Crystal Palace at the end of last month.

Nunez's latest switch comes during a crossroads in his Liverpool career, with reports suggesting that the Uruguay international has given Serie A champions Napoli the 'green light' over a move.

Taking to social media, Nunez offered a glimpse into his party celebrations.

In the carousel of pictures, he can be seen posing with his partner in front of blue and silver balloons, before the second snap on the post shows his partner using electric razor while Nunez poses with a cheeky smile.

It looks like an important summer in the 26-year-old's career as reports ramp up over a possible Anfield departure.

Should he leave Merseyside, then he will depart as a Premier League-winner, with his double against Brentford as one of the highlights during the title-winning campaign.

However, his time at Anfield has largely been disappointing, after failing to provide the goals return that his £85m deal promised.

Last season, he scored just five goals in 30 Premier League appearances, while his social media activity during the latter stages of the season hinted at friction over his lack of involvement.

The Athletic reported on Tuesday that Napoli were expected to make a bid for the Liverpool star after registering an interest in the Reds striker.

In January, Arne Slot's side rebuffed offers from the Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr as they looked to strengthen their attacking options for their title run-in, but the Reds opted to retain his services in order to utilise his quality for their own silverware ambitions.

The Dutchman faced questions over the Uruguayan throughout his debut season and, in the latter stages, there were instances - notably against West Ham - where he was left out of the squad completely.

Slot was forced to be over regarding Nunez's work-rate during the goalless draw with Aston Villa at Villa Park; he was a second-half substitute and saw a golden opportunity go begging.

But it was the attitude of the attacker that irked the Liverpool head coach.

"I helped him by saying you can miss a chance," Slot said at the time.

"I wasn't only hard on him, but for the second time in a row I wasn't happy with his work-rare, against Wolves and against Villa.

"I can't accept if a player doesn't give everything, that is clear.

"I can accept it once, but twice was a bit too much, that's why I addressed it.

"If you miss a chance, you need to be fighting for the team.

I'm not saying he didn't do that at all, but it wasn't the usual Darwin, the one that is loved by the fans.
