Liverpool could make as much as £56million from the sale of Darwin Nunez after the striker's transfer to the Saudi Pro League was confirmed.

Uruguay international Nunez has departed after three years at Anfield having agreed to join long-time suitors Al-Hilal.

The Reds negotiated a deal with the Saudi side that as well as seeing them guaranteed a fee of £46m, could also generate a further £10m should a range of add-ons be achieved.

The sale has been accepted at around £4m less than the verbal offer from another Saudi Pro League side, Al Nassr, that was rejected during the January transfer window.

Liverpool at the time prioritised keeping their squad together to help their ultimately successful Premier League title challenge, while acknowledging summer values are often slightly lower than in mid-season.

Napoli saw a bid for Nunez rejected earlier in the summer while AC Milan were also interested in the player.

It's understood Liverpool were surprised Newcastle United did not entertain a move for the striker given their pressing need for attacking reinforcements.

The transfer means Liverpool's income from this summer alone is £181m, which could rise to a maximum of £202m if all the add-ons clauses are met.

They have committed to spending £266m on players during the transfer window, with a £29m deal for Giorgi Mamardashvili having been agreed last year.

Liverpool will now turn their attention to replacing Nunez, with Newcastle's Alexander Isak still their main striker target.

Reds boss Arne Slot sidestepped questions about Isak at his press conference on Friday to preview today's (August 10) Community Shield clash against Crystal Palace at Wembley (3pm kick-off).

“As you know, from me and I think every manager works like this, you never talk about players that are not yours,” Slot said of Isak.

“I can talk about Hugo (Ekitike), who we have signed and done really well until now.

“We are very happy with the squad and have every reason to be happy because we won the league last season.

Okay, players left but we brought players in as well and youngsters are doing good.

“At this moment of time, Darwin might leave, indeed, but things are not signed so we need to wait a few days until that is completely done but there is indeed a chance he is going to leave.”
