Events at Brentford back in January would suffice.

With the Reds in danger of being held to a damaging third successive Premier League draw, Nunez was thrown on with 25 minutes remaining.

But it was only after the clock ticked into injury-time that the Uruguayan struck, scoring the opener in the 91st minute and then netting again two minutes later.

There was still time for Nunez, who had been booked for his wild celebration after the first goal, to then almost be sent off for clattering into home defender Nathan Collins.

With Arsenal throwing away a two-goal lead to draw at home to Aston Villa later in the day, it proved a pivotal intervention in the Premier League title race.

It was not, though, a turning point in Nunez's fortunes.

Only his fourth Premier League goal of the season, the Uruguayan started just one further match in the top flight - scoring the equaliser and winning a penalty in the 3-1 home win over Southampton - as Liverpool swept to the championship.

For the third successive season since arriving at the club, Nunez saw himself largely benched during the closing weeks of the campaign.

That, though, was in keeping with his season as a whole.

Nunez started a mere eight times in the Premier League and managed a further nine in cup competitions during which he scored just twice, against RB Leipzig in the Champions League and Southampton in the League Cup.

Nunez was always fighting the tide from the moment he was overlooked by new head coach Arne Slot in favour of Diogo Jota at the start of the season in a straight fight for the one central striking role.

And even when Jota was later injured and struggling for form, it says much that Slot preferred Luis Diaz as a makeshift number nine to the Uruguayan.

In fairness, Nunez very much bought into Slot's desire for more work-rate during the first half of the season, even if it came at the cost of goal threat - something which had never before been an issue during his Liverpool career.

But he eventually appeared a little disillusioned, leading to a poor performance in a cameo from the bench at Aston Villa in February that was highlighted by the Liverpool boss.

A missed penalty in the Champions League shoot-out against Paris Saint-German the following month did little to alter the perception Nunez and Liverpool are approaching a natural parting of ways.

The Reds turned down an approach from Saudi Arabia in January, preferring instead to retain Nunez as they challenged for honours.

The player benefited by playing a part in the title triumph.

Liverpool, though, are now braced for renewed interest from the Saudi Pro League while reports in Spain have suggested Atletico Madrid are pondering a bid.

Certainly, few would be surprised if Nunez's run-out from the bench on the final day of the season against Crystal Palace is the last time he appears in a Liverpool shirt.

Season rating: 6
