Manchester United remain hellbent on signing a new goalkeeper this summer, and Emi Martinez has not been scrubbed off their shortlist.
Ruben Amorim is busy revamping his squad this summer following a dreadful 2024/25 campaign, in which the Red Devils finished 15th in the Premier League and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham.
Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha have come in to level up the attack and could soon be joined by Benjamin Sesko, while Sporting CP captain Morten Hjulmand could be in line for a reunion with Amorim in midfield.
But all of that could be undone if United don’t improve their options between the posts.

Andre Onana has utterly failed to impress since joining from Inter Milan in the summer of 2023.
It doesn’t take a seasoned analyst to see that Onana has been prone to hapless blunders during his time at Old Trafford, but a peek at the data paints a dreadful picture.

The Cameroon international has made four errors leading to goals in the Premier League alone since joining United (FotMob), with that total increasing to eight across all competitions — thanks, in no small part, to two high-profile gaffs in last season’s Europa League.
What’s more, Onana posted a save percentage of just 67.2% in the Premier League last season, preventing only 0.53 goals and making just 22 high claims.
Martinez, by comparison, has been lauded as one of the best goalkeepers around right now over recent years.
Just last season, he helped Aston Villa to within a whisker of Champions League football, making just one error leading to a goal, while boasting a 69% save rate, 1.16 goals prevented and 56 high claims — far superior numbers to Onana.
United have already seen a loan bid rejected for Martinez, and any deal won’t come cheap.
But all of United’s efforts at the other end of the pitch might be rendered pointless if they cannot sign a goalkeeper who can be relied on.

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown, who remains well connected with the club, has confirmed United are still in the hunt for Martinez.
In fact, the Red Devils could move for the Argentine even if Onana remains at Old Trafford — which looks likely given he’s injured — in contrast to their original plan of selling the former Ajax man first.
“Man United still want to sign a goalkeeper,” Brown told Football Insider.
“Ruben Amorim wants to strengthen in that position and has been looking to do so.
“At the moment, they’re going to have to start the season without their first-choice goalkeeper because he’s picked up an injury in pre-season.
“I expected them to do more to sign Emiliano Martinez, but I am told that interest hasn’t gone away.
“Whether it’s him or somebody else, they want a new goalkeeper before the window closes.
“Aston Villa might have to sell somebody, so United want to take advantage of that.
“I think Martinez is a very, very good goalkeeper who would be a major improvement on what they’ve got, and it seems the club agree with my view of things.
“Obviously, they haven’t been able to sell Onana, but I’m not sure how much of an issue that will be.
“They wanted to do that before signing Martinez, but the interest just hasn’t been there and it looks like he’s going to be staying.
“I think if they really want Martinez, they’ll try to get him even with Onana there and then hopefully they can move him on in January or next year.
“That’s the decision the club will have to make, whether they want to balance having both of them.“
