Liverpool have brought in a wealth of talent but some players might be left a little disappointed if they do not make the starting XI.

The Reds romped to the Premier League title last season and rather than resting on their laurels, they have decided to strengthen while at the top.

Competition for places was already tough, but now after spending close to £300m, players will have to work even harder to earn their spot in the team.

Of course, certain individuals will be cut as frustrated figures more often than not and may not get as many chances to impress, with this likely the case for one new signing in particular.

And, with this, ex-Liverpool goalkeeper David James, like many Reds fans, will be interested to see how he reacts to starting on the bench.

Liverpool may have had a more than impressive summer this time around, but last year, the feeling around the club was a little different.

Richard Hughes took charge of his first proper window and Arne Slot came in as the new manager, yet very little change occurred and they technically only signed Federico Chiesa.

This is because they decided to send shot-stopper Giorgi Mamardashvili back on loan to Valencia for one more year, with the Georgian now ready to fight for his spot in the Liverpool team.

However, it is safe to say he has the near-impossible task of replacing one of the best keepers in the world as Alisson stands in his way, with former Red James interested to see how much game time he gets next season.

“You have to understand Liverpool haven’t looked at Mamardashvili and thought ‘We need to fill a gap here.

Liverpool are one of the biggest clubs in the world and it’s not often you get asked twice,” James told the PA news agency as per The Independent.

“Mamardashvili has come in as a direct challenger.

He will have to believe he is good enough to play for Liverpool, it’s one of the toughest goalkeeping positions in world football.

“But he has played at major tournaments and international finals and excelled so I don’t think the occasion is going to faze him.

“It will just be interesting if he doesn’t start the season how motivated he will be to wait for his opportunities, because he will get opportunities.”

It is only pre-season, of course, but it has been so far, so good for Mamardashvili and he has made the most of the chances he has had.

Although he has not had too much to do, he has stayed alert and pulled off some decent saves when called upon, a good trait to have, especially as the Reds will dominate large chunks of games next season.

And, with Alisson missing part of pre-season due to personal issues and flying back home to Brazil, there is a very good chance that the Georgian starts the Community Shield game on Sunday, giving him another chance to impress.

Mamardashvili will also get plenty of game time in cup competitions, and with Alisson likely to get his usual injury at some point in the campaign, the Georgian could become a more regular figure than perhaps people realise.
