In Liverpool’s 2-0 defeat to Everton, Darwin Nunez had a challenging outing that didn’t meet the expectations of a striker playing for a title-challenging side.

Nunez struggled to make a significant impact and was not a potent force upfront.

The Uruguayan got a 6.0 match rating according to FotMob, missing that one big chance he shot straight at Jordan Pickford in the second-half – despite most of the goal mouth gaping.

Furthermore, he only made 11 passes and lost all five of his ground duels.

It was poor showing from Liverpool’s No.9, and he has justifiably caught some heat with the Reds essentially out of the title race.

Jamie Carragher seems to have lost patience with the Uruguayan after the game, saying:

“In terms of Núñez and the club going forward.”

I think after two years, I don’t think there’ll be a massive improvement in him.”

“I don’t think he’s enough to win you the biggest trophies.”

Despite the energy and chaos Darwin Nunez brings to the pitch, he has struggled to channel it into consistent goal scoring.

Since November, Nunez has scored just 7 league goals, a concerning figure considering his transfer could reach up to £85 million with add-ons.

Over the course of the Premier League season, he has netted 11 goals, which falls short of expectations for a lead striker on a team contending for the title.

The Telegraph came out with a report today suggesting that Nunez’ future at Anfield could become muddied with his ‘biggest ally’ Jurgen Klopp.

The likes of Michael Edwards and Sporting Director Richard Hughes ‘are entitled to look coldly’ on the 24-year-old have not played a part in signing him.

But now David Ornstein has provided his take on the matter.

What did David Ornstein say about Darwin Nunez?

On his Athletic Q&A, David Ornstein was asked if the Uruguayan had the chance to be moved on this summer with Edwards and Hughes set to take charge of affairs.

However, the acclaimed journalist has claimed it would be difficult to see Nunez leave this summer:

“I very much doubt Nunez will be leaving?

Whatever you think of his form recently, he has shown himself to be a good player for club and country, he is still young.”

“Liverpool wouldn’t make any/much profit from selling him now and there is clear potential, in my opinion, for him to have a successful career at Anfield.”

However, the Athletic journalist did reveal that there is a caveat of sorts:

“Now if suitable offers come in for pretty much any player it’s only natural that Edwards, Hughes and anyone else in their positions – and at board an ownership level – will consider them.”

“But that doesn’t mean they will be accepted and there are no sings that dramatic revolution is on the way for Liverpool… more likely smart and necessary revolution.”

There is no doubt that Nunez is a talented player, but it is starting to feel like he is running out time to shake his old habits and mature into the world-class goalscorer Liverpool needs.
