David Ornstein has provided his latest on Liverpool and their plans in the transfer market.
Following the Merseyside giants this summer transfer window has turned in something of an extreme sport.
Each day brings new speculation and rapid developments, with stories shifting almost hourly.
One moment, a player is seemingly close to joining; the next, rumours fade, and another name emerges.
The constant flow of reports and social media updates makes it difficult to separate fact from fiction.
Liverpool is putting the finishing touches on the Milos Kerkez acquisition, with the Hungarian expected to be announced today (Tuesday).
The fullback becomes the third major signing of the summer after Jeremey Frimpong and Florian Wirtz.
And while Reds fans may be hoping for a striker or centre-back signing to quickly add to an already excellent summer, patience may be required.
That’s because David Ornstein, reporting in the Athletic’s Dealsheet, has explained that it is likely that Liverpool now sit back and observe options in the market.
The transfer journalist feels Liverpool’s next move will be simply observing any potential deals that would be beneficial for Arne Slot’s side:
“Liverpool have conducted impressive early work this summer — recruiting Jeremie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz and agreeing a deal for Milos Kerkez — but that activity is likely to be followed by a pause while they observe market developments.”
He adds that while a striker signing has been advertised widely, nothing is advanced on that front:
“Their admiration for forwards such as Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike is well documented but there is nothing significant in motion at present,” the reporter explained.
“Whether or not a direct replacement is acquired for Nunez – whose minutes have been limited anyway – buying Wirtz has already changed the attacking dynamic available to head coach Arne Slot, with multiple options and combinations at his disposal.”
It would make sense, as the Anfield club has spent heavily already.
Liverpool have forked over £29.5 million (Frimpong) + £100.1 million (Wirtz, guaranteed) + £16 million (Wirtz, add-ons, if all met) + £40 million (Kerkez) = £185.6 million (if all add-ons are activated).
So, it seems that Reds fans may be able to take a bit of a breather from all the transfer news of the past few weeks.
