The expectation remains that Darwin Nunez moves on from Anfield this summer.
The Uruguayan international, who joined the Reds in 2022 for a club-record £85 million, has struggled to cement his place under manager Arne Slot and is now expected to depart as part of a broader squad overhaul.
And there have now been new contacts for the 25-year-old’s departure.
Al-Hilal have intensified efforts to sign Núñez after failing to land Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, who rejected their €70 million offer earlier this week.
Journalist Santi Aouna reported that “contact has been established” between the Saudi club and Núñez’s representatives
Now David Ornstein has corroborated the report and has suggested that the Saudi club needs to clear two hurdles; namely the minimum fee of €70m[£59m] and to fully convince the player who still prefers a move within Europe.
The Athletic reporter revealed:
“There is, meanwhile, a possible departure from Merseyside in the form of Darwin Nunez.”
“Al Hilal contacted Liverpool about the Uruguay striker on Monday and the Saudi Pro League team were made aware about the conditions of a move.”
“Liverpool rejected a proposal worth €70m [approximately £59m] from Al Nassr in January and that sets a minimum bar if an exit is to materialise.”
“Nunez is thought to favour staying in Europe — Spain and Italy being a priority?
Atletico Madrid are among those considering the forward.”
Liverpool will no doubt be keen to recoup a significant portion of their initial investment in Nunez
Despite occasional moments of excellence, the Uruguayan striker made just seven Premier League starts in the 2024-25 season, accumulating only 757 minutes under Dutch manager Arne Slot.
His final start for Liverpool came in March 2025, as Slot increasingly opted for Luis Díaz and Diogo Jota in central attacking positions.
It now seems likely that the forward will conclude his Liverpool career having scored 40 goals in 122 appearances for the club.
