David Ornstein has been discussing the latest around Liverpool and Arne Slot.
The Feyenoord manager has risen to priority this week after numerous reliable reports pinpointed his name as the frontrunner.
Xabi Alonso was initially the frontrunner when Jurgen Klopp announced his intention to step down from his role in January.
It was believed that the Anfield hierarchy could have coaxed him out of Bayer Leverkusen.
However, the Spaniard publicly announced his intention to remain with the newly crowned Bundesliga champions for next season.
Then Ruben Amorim was put in the spotlight, with his body of work at Sporting CP boding well for his future as a manager.
But interest from West Ham, among other reasons, meant that the Reds also neglected to move further with the 39-year-old.
Feyenoord manager Arne Slot has now emerged as a feasible candidate for the Anfield hierarchy.
Arne Slot had a noteworthy playing career as a midfielder, featuring prominently for Eredivisie clubs like FC Zwolle and NAC Breda
Slot transitioned into coaching, starting with a role as a youth coach at PEC Zwolle before progressing to AZ Alkmaar.
Forging a reputation at AZ, the 45-year-old was picked up by Feyenoord – where his reputation really started to take off.
Under his leadership, Feyenoord recently clinched the KNVB Cup this past weekend.
Furthermore, he led the team to their first Eredivisie championship in six years during the 2022/23 season, demonstrating Slot’s ability to consistently secure trophies.
What did David Ornstein say of Liverpool’s interest in Arne Slot?
Fabrizio Romano has already reported that Liverpool have made initial contact with Arne Slot.
But David Ornstein warns that his appointment is not a ‘foregone conclusion’ amid plenty of reports:
“He’s definitely a strong candidate,” David Ornstein began on the Sky Sports Back Pages podcast (via GIVEMESPORT)
“I think he’s gone to the top of the bookmaker’s lists, and our information is that he appears to be the first choice now, and that’s being reported in many of the papers.
Arne Slot does have the credentials.”
“He came very close, it seemed, to getting the Tottenham Hotspur job last summer.”
“For whatever reason, he decided against it, and I think finances were also a bit of an issue in terms of paying what it takes, because I don’t think there’s a release clause in there.”
“If they decide to go for him, that will be something Liverpool will have to get their head around.”
“We’ve heard figures maybe even a little bit higher, and they will drive a hard bargain because they don’t want to lose him.”
“But hopefully, if they go forward with it, it will give the Liverpool fans and the club a little bit of clarity.”
“It doesn’t sound like a foregone conclusion, and they will have to talk further.”
“I think there has been contact.”
“Tonight [Tuesday], we’re reporting on The Athletic between Liverpool and Slot, but it has not yet been between Liverpool and Feyenoord?
So, there’s a bit of a way to go yet.”
Arne Slot has a contract until 2026, and it’s believed that he is open to a move to Liverpool.
