Liverpool and Bayern Munich have emerged as the primary suitors for Florian Wirtz after Manchester City pulled out of the running for the 22-year-old German international this week.
The 22-year-old attacking midfielder, fresh off a stellar season with 16 goals and 15 assists across all competitions, has become one of Europe’s most coveted talents.
With Xabi Alonso leaving Leverkusen to take charge at Real Madrid and teammate Jeremie Frimpong reportedly closing in on a move to Anfield, Wirtz appears to be contemplating his future at the BayArena.
Liverpool’s pursuit of Florian Wirtz has ramped up after direct talks with his representatives.
Reports indicate the Reds arranged a private jet to bring Wirtz’s camp to Blackpool, where they presented their vision for his future at Anfield.
Bayer Leverkusen has set an asking price of around €150 million (£126 million) for Bayern Munich but are reportedly open to accepting a slightly lower fee – €100 million (£84 million) – from clubs outside Germany.
Leverkusen are said to strongly prefer selling Wirtz abroad rather than strengthening domestic rivals like Bayern.
Now David Ornstein has provided his slant on proceedings, explaining to NBC Sports that Liverpool have admired the 22-year-old for a long time:
“Liverpool do have an interest in Florian Wirtz, also of Bayer Leverkusen.
But there’s no guarantee this will happen; let’s see if he’s going to leave Bayer Leverkusen at all.”
“Let’s see if he wants to leave Germany — if he does, then Liverpool are going to make a push for him?
He’s a player they’ve liked for a long time, but Bayern Munich is possibly the favourites to sign him.”
However, the Athletic journalist then warned that even if Wirtz would be open to a move, there is no “certainty” that Liverpool will move past initial interest:
“Manchester City were in the frame as well, but it seems today that they’ve pulled out of that and some are suggesting it’s between Bayern Munich and Liverpool.”
“Liverpool will be there for a player of that calibre, you’re always going to be interested, but there’s no certainty that it’s going to go further.”
The potential acquisition of Wirtz would likely shatter Liverpool’s transfer record.
Manchester City pulled out of a potential deal due to their worries over the finances of the transfer.
