The Swedish international’s blend of technical brilliance, physicality, and elite finishing (21 Premier League goals in 2024/25) makes him an ideal candidate to replace the likely departing Darwin Nunez.

Yet despite his perfect fit for Slot’s system, a summer move to Anfield appears increasingly improbable.

Speaking on the latest Athletic FC Podcast episode, transfer journalist David Ornstein has confirmed should Newcastle United qualifying for the Champions League (with the five spots making it a distinct possibility) then an Isak transfer will not be a topic in the summer window:

“There is an expectation that Darwin Nunez will leave and so Liverpool will need to bring in somebody in that position, you assume

It’s scary to think if Liverpool manage to get a goalscorer, what on earth they could do in domestic and European competition.

“I do think Isak would be the one that Liverpool would look to, as would Arsenal and many other clubs

It’s less realistic to think it’s going to happen, though, because if Newcastle qualify for the Champions League, I think it’s not even a conversation.

“If they don’t qualify for the Champions League, maybe there is a window of opportunity, but I don’t think it really changes the price much of the transfer fee, let alone the salary request and agents’ commissions; and any club that’s going to commit to that level of resource, if indeed there’s any opportunity, is basically going to use all of their budget on that player.”

From Ornstein’s words, it’s clear that any potential Isak move would need a lot of boxes to check, including a record transfer fee at the Anfield club.

Meanwhile, Newcastle have repeatedly emphasized their intent to build around Isak, with CEO Darren Eales stating it would be “crazy” to sell their crown jewel.

His contract runs until 2028, and talks over a new deal-which could raise his wages to £200,000/week-are reportedly ongoing.
