Liverpool fans may have been watching on nervously on Sunday afternoon as Marc Guehi turned out once again for Crystal Palace.
The Reds have been heavily linked with a move for Guehi in the final two weeks of the transfer window.
Having signed Giovanni Leoni on Friday, Liverpool‘s need for centre-back cover is not as great as it was, but a player as accomplished as the Palace captain arriving would ease any lingering fears.
Liverpool fans were impressed with Guehi in the Community Shield last weekend and the 25-year-old stood firm once again to help his team to a clean sheet against Chelsea.
There were claims before the game that Liverpool would resume talks over a transfer for Guehi on Monday, with Arne Slot keen to provide further options in defence.
And just ahead of kick-off at Stamford Bridge, journalist David Ornstein provided his own update on the situation.

The reason the door is even slightly ajar for Liverpool to sign Guehi this summer is because his contract expires next summer.
Still able to bank a decent transfer fee for their skipper, Palace are seemingly keen to avoid a situation where Guehi leaves on a free in 2026.

But, speaking pitch side at Old Trafford on Sunday, Ornstein claimed that this is still a scenario which could play out.
Guehi has two options: join Liverpool now, or leave on a free next year.
“Marc Guehi is a player who may leave Crystal Palace as well [as Eberechi Eze],” said the journalist.
“They’re looking for alternatives if that happens.”

“Liverpool have held initial talks, but he may stay and see out the final 12 months of his contract and leave as a free agent in 2026.
He’s playing today [Sunday].”
Whether it is this year or in 12 month’s time, it seems a good bet that Guehi will end up at Liverpool.
The signing of Leoni has allowed Liverpool to be a little more relaxed in their pursuit of Guehi.
If they get the England international for a reasonable fee now then brilliant, he can challenge Ibrahima Konate to be an immediate starter next to Virgil van Dijk.
Of course, Guehi is likely to have many more suitors in a year’s time if he is leaving Palace on a free transfer.
Liverpool may not have a free run at him.
But all of the noises suggest that Guehi is sold on joining the Reds.
