David Sullivan has absolved himself of any responsibility as West Ham continue to struggle enormously under Graham Potter’s leadership.

As co-owner, Sullivan has been under immense pressure at West Ham over the last few seasons, which reached an all-time high as David Moyes‘ tenure at the London Stadium came to a disappointing end.

Since the Scot’s exit and subsequent success at Everton, Julen Lopetegui has come and gone in East London in just seven months, with Potter being given the reins as his successor.

West Ham are unlikely to sack Potter now, Mick Brown told Football Insider, however, even after the Hammers were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Wolves to increase their winless start to the 2025/26 campaign.

The former Brighton and Chelsea figure has won just 22 per cent of his matches in charge so far, but with evidence of a last-gasp transfer overhaul at the London Stadium, there could be time left for him yet.

According to the Daily Mail (27 August), the “finger-pointing” has already begun at the London Stadium, with Sullivan being keen to blame those in the dugout for the club’s struggles in recent weeks.

It is understood that Potter remains safe in his role in East London despite a “diabolical” start to the campaign, which has placed him under pressure within seven months of taking the position.

With the manager just seven months into a two-and-a-half-year deal with the Hammers, it is understood that no break clause exists in his contract.

Football Insider verdict

Southampton’s Mateus Fernandes appears to be closing in on a move to the London Stadium alongside Monaco’s Soungoutou Magassa, but more new faces are desperately needed this summer.

Newcastle United-linked Lucas Paqueta could also leave ahead of the 1 September deadline, and that would be a truly massive blow to the team’s attack for the 2025/26 campaign.

While Jarrod Bowen is a huge figure for the Irons, there is only so much he can do to continue carrying the team on his back, having notched 14 goals and eight assists in all competitions last season.

With four goals and seven assists in 46 appearances for the Saints, there is no doubt over the youngster’s ability, but it would be unfair to expect him to have a similar impact on the game to Paqueta.

The signing of Magassa would certainly allow the 21-year-old to express himself more freely, though, with Guido Rodriguez failing to adapt to the Premier League and Edson Alvarez already leaving the club.

Multiple big changes need to be made before the summer transfer window slams shut, but unless Sullivan is willing to back Potter, it could all backfire very, very quickly this season.
