Liverpool are trying to sign a big money central striker for the second time in three years.

The Reds are prepared to shell out a huge amount of money in order to buy Alexander Isak from Newcastle.

The last time Liverpool broke their transfer record on a striker was when Darwin Nunez arrived in 2022.

Although he has had his moments with the Reds, it simply has not ever really happened for Nunez across three frustrating seasons.

Isak would certainly be an upgrade on the Uruguayan, and Nunez is now actively negotiating to leave Liverpool.

But while Saudi Arabia looks likely to be his destination as things stand, Liverpool’s No.

9 has been urged to take the opportunity to join Newcastle instead.

Newcastle are searching for a new striker this summer.

In fact, until they find one, there is no chance of Liverpool signing Isak.

The Magpies have a 50/50 chance of buying Benjamin Sesko, but the other 50 per cent of that results in the Slovenian joining Manchester United instead.

Having already missed out on a number of targets, Newcastle may then have no choice but to block Isak’s move to Liverpool.

According to former Red Don Hutchison, though, Nunez being involved as part of the deal could end up suiting everyone.

“He’ll come good, just some players you go to the likes of Real Madrid’s, Barcelona’s, Man United’s, Liverpool’s, sometimes the shirt can weigh heavy,” Hutchison, who is a Newcastle fan, told ESPN FC.

“You can be a really, really good player and it just doesn’t happen.

I think he’s the type of guy that might go to a Napoli or Atletico Madrid, or he might go to Newcastle, and he’ll come good because he’s emotional.

“I can see him coming good somewhere because he’s too good of a player, but not in the way the season panned out last season, he didn’t get much game time, he lost his confidence,” adds the former Scotland midfielder.

“But honestly, genuinely, I think there’s a player in there and I would take him at Newcastle for sure, definitely, and hope and pray that Eddie Howe can get the best out of him.”

Should Newcastle lose out on Sesko, there has been some suggestion that they could pivot towards Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins instead.

However, there is an argument that Nunez would be an even better option for the Geordies.

Liverpool are a willing seller, and with negotiations ongoing over Isak, it would be a relatively easy deal to tie up.

Nunez has been nothing like as prolific as Newcastle’s Swedish superstar since they arrived in England, but as Hutchison says, he may blossom in a different environment.

For now, it does not seem to be something Newcastle are pursuing, but should Sesko opt for Old Trafford, perhaps Nunez will become an option.
