Everton midfielder Dele Alli has disclosed how close he came to joining Liverpool from MK Dons at the outset of his career.

Having risen through the ranks of the Dons’ academy, Alli made a significant impact in his inaugural full season in senior football, tallying seven goals across all competitions during the 2013-14 campaign at the tender age of 17.

His impressive performances in League One drew interest from several top-flight clubs, including Liverpool, the team he had passionately supported in his youth.

At that time, Liverpool, under the management of Brendan Rodgers, were mounting a formidable title challenge led by the sensational Luis Suarez, narrowly missing out on clinching the Premier League title by a mere two points.

Following Alli’s goal-scoring display for the Dons in a victory over Coventry in April 2014, Rodgers arranged a meeting with the burgeoning talent, expressing interest in bringing him to Anfield.

“So after the game, Liverpool would play in West Ham, I think in London,” the England midfielder told Sky Sports.

“And then I went to meet Brendan Rodgers after that game, the night before the Liverpool game, and we had a conversation but it never happened.

I felt at that time I was ready to take the next step.”

Alli ultimately chose to stay at MK Dons, where he would go on to have an even more prolific campaign the following season.

His remarkable performances caught the attention of Tottenham Hotspur, leading to his transfer to the North London club during the January transfer window.

Upon joining Spurs, Alli signed a five-and-a-half year deal.

However, he returned to Stadium MK on loan for the remainder of the season, where he played a pivotal role in helping the club secure promotion to the Championship.

“I wanted to go [back to the Dons on loan] because, I wanted to see the team get promoted,” the 28-year-old continued.

“Obviously it was my local team and we were second in the league.

“So I wanted to go back and try and help them finish that off

Because by that time, [I knew] I’d be definitely ready to go to the Premier League.”
