Liverpool and Bayern Munich legend Dietmar Hamann has publicly criticized Bayern Munich's pursuit of Liverpool winger Luis Díaz, calling the proposed transfer a poor decision. Díaz, 28, scored 13 goals during Liverpool’s recent Premier League-winning season and has attracted interest from several clubs, including Bayern and Barcelona. Bayern’s initial £58.5 million bid was rejected, with Liverpool reportedly demanding £80 million for the Colombian international who joined the Reds in January 2023.
Hamann expressed concerns about Díaz’s age and durability, noting the player's heavy schedule, including extensive long-haul flights to South America. He questioned the value of investing heavily in a player who would be 32 by the end of his contract, suggesting Bayern’s youth academy should focus on long-term assets instead of an expensive short-term signing.

Despite Liverpool’s resistance, Bayern ultimately secured Díaz’s signing in late July 2025. The transfer fee agreed was €67.5 million fixed, with potential bonuses raising it to €75 million. Díaz signed a four-year contract running until summer 2029, reportedly earning €14 million annually. The Colombian was set to quickly join Bayern’s pre-season preparations, including a medical examination in Munich and inclusion in the squad for an upcoming friendly against Olympique Lyon.
Bayern’s motivation for signing Díaz includes strengthening their attack after Leroy Sané’s departure and Jamal Musiala’s severe injury during the Club World Cup, which sidelined Musiala for several months. Although Bayern initially faced Liverpool's refusal to let Díaz go, continued negotiations eventually led to the successful transfer. Bayern experts, including Hamann, initially debated the deal’s merit, with some praising Díaz’s potential impact at the German club despite earlier reservations.
