Liverpool have had some world-class midfielders throughout their history and this season is no different.

The Reds are often praised for their attacking prowess due to the amount of goals they score, but the heartbeat of their team is really the midfield.

In the middle of the park, they have players who make the team tick, doing the dirty work and perhaps slipping under the radar at points throughout the season.

Alexis Mac Allister is just one of the key cogs in Arne Slot’s winning machine, with the Argentine one of Liverpool’s best-ever buys, costing just an initial £35m.

He has certainly established himself as a key figure at Anfield and this is something Reds legend Steven Gerrard recognises, although he has gone a step further in his praise for the 26-year-old.

If there is one man who knows exactly what it takes to be one of the best midfielders in the world, it’s Gerrard, with the scouser himself part of this category for the majority of his career.

He also knows better than anyone what it takes to become a regular in the middle of the park for Liverpool and just how hard it is to do, something Mac Allister makes look effortless.

And, Gerrard could not have spoken highly enough about the Argentine and ranked him as the second-best midfielder in the world, something Mac Allister was shocked to hear.

“It’s really, really special coming from Steven,” Mac Allister said to ESPN UK.

“As you said, coming from a legend of Liverpool, we all love him and we all appreciate these sorts of things.

I didn’t expect it but it’s really good.”

He has certainly earned the right to be included in this bracket and Reds fans will hope there is still plenty more to come, although keeping him around will certainly be a tough task as many of the top teams, mainly Real Madrid, will likely be sniffing around in the near future.

With so many top stars, past and present, picking just three midfielders is a very tricky job, with Reds fans hoping that some of their players are mentioned in the conversation.

And, Mac Allister did just that, while also naming which three midfielders he believes are the best of all time.

“In terms of midfielders, I think Dominik [Szoboszlai] and Ryan [Gravenberch] last year, they were really good midfielders for us,” he also told ESPN UK.

“But if I have to speak in history, then I always say I love Iniesta, and I think him, Xavi and Busquets were something really special.

“And of course Steve [Gerrard] for us as Liverpool supporters as he was a really good player.”
