Diego Simeone has apologised for his heated confrontation during Liverpool's thrilling 3-2 victory over Atletico Madrid, after he was sent off for verbally clashing with a supporter.

The Atletico boss had celebrated enthusiastically when Marcos Llorente netted an equaliser in the closing stages of their Champions League opener, appearing to salvage a valuable point for the struggling Spanish side.

But captain Virgil van Dijk emerged as the hero in the 92nd minute, heading home powerfully from Dominik Szoboszlai's corner delivery to clinch all three points and remain unbeaten across all competitions.

This dramatic winner triggered chaos on the sidelines as Simeone became embroiled in a furious exchange with supporters seated behind the away dugout.

Match officials were forced to step in before referee Maurizio Mariani showed the Argentine manager a red card.

Simeone has been in charge at Atletico since 2011 and is considered one of the world's richest football managers.

According to Celebrity Net Worth, the Argentine is believed to be the second-richest manager globally, with an estimated net worth of £102m.

He has constructed formidable teams during his time in charge of the Spanish club, securing the La Liga crown twice, two Copa del Reys, two Europa League honours and two UEFA Super Cups.

Atletico have also finished as Champions League runners-up on two occasions, suffering defeat to fellow Spaniards Real Madrid both times.

This triumph has witnessed Simeone's reputation soar considerably over the years, with his most recent contract believed to be worth around £14million per year, according to The Athletic.

However, all of Simeone's wealth won't rescue him from his European suspension this time around.

His red card meant his players departed Anfield alone, devastated by their last-gasp defeat.

When pressed further about his reaction to the goal and his issues with the home fans afterwards, he added: "They were shouting insults through the whole game from behind the bench and I cannot say anything as I am a coach.

"Obviously my reaction is not justifiable, I insulted him.
