Diego Simeone being held back by Liverpool supporters

Diego Simeone had to be held back by stewards after being involved in an altercation with Liverpool supporters as his side were beaten at Anfield.

The Reds had raced into a 2-0 lead inside the opening five minutes against Atletico Madrid.

A brace from Marcos Llorente then restored parity, but two minutes into stoppage time, Virgil van Dijk rose highest to head home a corner.

But in the immediate aftermath of the goal, TV cameras picked up Simeone being held back by Liverpool stewards as he appeared to clash with home supporters.

He was then spoken to by referee Maurizio Mariani before TNT Sport commentator Darren Fletch said the Argentine had been sent off.

TV cameras then picked up Simeone heading down the Anfield tunnel before the full-time whistle had been blown.

Reacting to the drama, TNT commentator Ally McCoist said: "Let's be honest, after the opening minutes we were thinking how many [for Liverpool].

But they got back in it.

"Second half Llorente was tremendous.

Brilliant header."
