Spanish Police have confirmed details on the tragic death of Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota.

The devastating news has broken this morning that the Reds forward has died in a car accident.

The 28-year-old is said to have been travelling with his brother, Andre Silva, in the Zamora region of Sanabria when the incident occurred.



According to the Zamora provincial council, firefighters attended the scene on the A52, known as the Palacios de Sanabria, after the vehicle caught fire.



Zamora News report that emergency services were called to the scene shortly before 1am on Thursday morning, with the vehicle heading towards nearby Benavente.

BBC News has spoken to the Guardia Civil this morning, who confirmed the deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva.

The comments from the police, reported by the BBC, said: "The information we have so far is that the car, which was a Lamborghini, was in a road traffic accident and left the road due to a tyre blowout while overtaking.

"It was in the early hours, 00:30 BST, in the municipality of Cernadilla in the province of Zamora.

"The car caught on fire and the two occupants were killed."

Tributes are flowing in for the Reds striker after the shocking news of his death emerged this morning.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has posted to Instagram: "Absolutely devastated by the sad news about Diogo Jota.

"Thoughts are with his wife Rute and their three kids."

Ex-Manchester United defender Gary Neville said: "That is heartbreaking news on Diogo Jota and his brother.

All my love and best wishes to his family."

FC Porto, a club Jota spent a year on loan with between 2016 and 2017 also put out a statement, they said: "FC Porto is in mourning.

"It is with shock and deep sorrow that we send our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who was also our athlete in the youth ranks."
