Diogo Jota, the beloved Liverpool forward, and his brother Andre Silva passed away on July 3, 2025.
The loss shocked not only the football world but also the many who knew them as hardworking, dedicated, and humble individuals.
As Liverpool mourns their loss, the football community has come together to pay their respects and remember these two men who made their mark on the field and in the hearts of those around them.
On July 5, 2025, a funeral service was held at Igreja Matriz de Gondomar, located on the outskirts of Porto, Portugal.
The service was attended by a host of Liverpool players, including captain Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson, and Darwin Nunez.
Their presence spoke volumes about the bond they shared with Jota, who had been more than just a teammate to them.
In a tribute to the brothers, floral tributes were carried by Robertson and Van Dijk just before the service began, a touching gesture of love and respect.
Although only family and close friends were allowed inside the church, the public could follow the service through a livestream.
The congregation witnessed a heartfelt ceremony that celebrated the lives of Jota and Andre, two men who had impacted everyone they met.
Their humility, discipline, and sportsmanship stood as a testament to the legacy they left behind.
In a personal tribute, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot shared his feelings of loss, “What to say?
What can anyone say at a time like this when the shock and the pain is so incredibly raw?”
Slot spoke not only as a football manager but as a father, son, and brother.
“Diogo was not just our player.”
“He was a loved one to all of us.”
“He was a teammate, a colleague, a workmate, and in all of those roles, he was very special.”
Slot’s message continued, reflecting on the closeness he had with Jota: “The last time we spoke, I congratulated Diogo on winning the Nations League and wished him luck for his forthcoming wedding.”
“In many ways, it was a dream summer for Diogo and his family, which makes it all the more heartbreaking that it should end like this.”
As Slot and the rest of the Liverpool family mourn, they have vowed to keep Jota’s memory alive.
“When the time is right, we will celebrate Diogo Jota, we will remember his goals, and we will sing his song,” Slot said.
For now, though, the team mourns together, honoring a teammate who was not only a talented footballer but also a dear friend, a man who will never be forgotten.
