Liverpool star Diogo Jota has died at the age of 28.

The Portugal forward and his brother, Andre, were killed in a car crash in Spain on Thursday morning.

And family and friends of the brothers are now gathering for their funeral in their homeland.

According to the Spanish Guardia Civil, the accident happened after Jota and his brother’s Lamborghini ‘left the road due to a tyre blow out while overtaking.’

Further details revealed that he was travelling by car from Porto to get a ferry from Santander back to England.

The Portugal international had been advised by doctors not to fly back to Liverpool as he had undergone minor surgery.

News of Jota's death sent shockwaves throughout the football world, with tributes flooding in and fans leaving wreaths, scarves, shirts and flowers at a makeshift shrine outside Anfield.

Liverpool said the club is 'devastated' at the 'unimaginable loss' of their player, while Cristiano Ronaldo said the passing of his international teammate 'doesn't make sense'.

The funeral of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva has now finished.

The coffins arrived and were carried into the Capela da Ressurreicao an hour ago, with Ruben Neves among the pallbearers.

A procession of family, friends, teammates and colleagues then also entered the church, while a large crowd of mourners were gathered respectfully outside the gates in support of the family of the two footballers.

A live audio feed of the service was played outside the church for the mourners who had gathered there.

The service started with the Lord's Prayer.

Diogo and Andre's family are Catholic, and a priest in Gondomar  told local reporters on Friday that Jota deeply cared about his faith.

The Liverpool star often pointed to the sky in celebrations of his goals in a public showing of his beleifs.

Church bells rang out as the service came to a close, as those in attendance began to leave the chapel.

The football world continues to mourn the death of Liverpool's Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva.

The winger played with Jota at Wolves during the 2019/20 season with the now-Blues star, even assisting his then-teammate in a Europa League win over Besiktas.
