Diogo Goncalves paid tribute to former teammate Diogo Jota as he copied the late Liverpool star's gaming controller celebration after scoring for Real Salt Lake.

Goncalves, who played alongside Jota for Portugal's Under-21s earlier in his career, produced a sumptuous finish against St.

Louis CITY SC in the MLS before running to the corner of the pitch, sitting cross-legged on the ground, and pretending to play a video game.

As well as being a fantastic soccer player, Jota, who died in a car crash last week, was well known to be a world-class gamer: in 2021, he achieved the world No.1 ranking on FIFA 21 on PlayStation after going an unbeaten 30-0 in the soccer game's Ultimate Team Champions mode.

Goncalves also pointed to the sky and made a love heart gesture with his hands before the resumption of the game.

Goncalves, 28, wasn't the only player to mimic Jota's celebration over the weekend, with Ousmane Dembele also producing it after scoring for Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup, while Aussie rules footballer Jesse also performed it.

Kylian Mbappe, meanwhile, ran to the pitchside camera and made out the number 20 — Jota's squad number at Liverpool — with his hands as he celebrated scoring Real Madrid's third goal against Borussia Dortmund.

The death of Jota and his younger brother, Andre Silva, sent the sporting world into mourning on Thursday, with the global soccer community uniting in grief.

The pair were journeying from Portugal to the Spanish port city of Santander, from where they intended to travel on a ferry to Portsmouth ahead of returning to Liverpool, when they died in a crash.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk arrived with a floral tribute in his hands, as did Andy Robertson, while Liverpool head coach Arne Slot and several other Reds players also turned out to bid their final farewells to Jota.

Former Liverpool teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold was unable to attend due to his Club World Cup commitments with Real Madrid, but expressed his sadness after Los Blancos' quarter-final win over Borussia Dortmund.

"It's been very difficult for everyone that knew him, not just me and his teammates, friends or family, but the footballing world," Alexander-Arnold added

"Some things are bigger than the game.

"It's been difficult, but also very heart-warming to see the footballing world unite and come together to show their love and support for his family and his brother for what must be mind-blowingly hard times for his family.

"I've been around his family, his brother, his amazing wife and amazing three children, so it's truly heart-breaking
